According to a report at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology, of the approximately 17,000 patients with headache who were referred to a specialty headache clinic from primary care, approximately a third were taking a kind of opiates at the time of the referral.

About a third of the referred patients were taking opiates at the time of referral.

Other inappropriate medications were antianxiety drugs, barbiturates, antidepressants, antiemetics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, benzodiazepines, decongestants, and muscle relaxants.

Only 9% of the referred patients were taking a triptan
